Via Tender: Get color values

Assigned to Tender discussion #870. As reported in Tender:
I see that the backdrops and posters display up to eight color bars in the user views.
I would like to use these to compute colors of text to lay over the backdrops.
Can you say something about how these are calculated, and how to retrieve them?
