In line with this, I'd be personally overjoyed if tmdb supported multiple releases of a movie. By release I mean DVD, Bluray, etc. that can be identified with a disc ID, EAN, etc. One instance of the movie, multiple release formats. So, R1 dvd's, R2, the R2 boxed set which contains three films.

This would enable the tmdb data to be a drop in replacement for proprietary databases such as DVD Profiler & My Movies, for example.

Each release could hold specific information independent to the actual movie (release date, format (dvd, bluray, hd-dvd ...), edition (director's cut, extended, unrated ...), region specific ratings, and so on).

    I envisage a workflow like,

user types in an EAN or scans a barcode
app searches releases on tmdb, finds the release and fills in the data.
if it doesn't find the release, the user can then find the existing movie(s), and associate it (them) with the release and fill in the missing release info for submission.
worst case, neither the release nor the movie are present and user can submit them both.

(Obviously, this goes for TV shows as well)

Adding my support for this ticket.

As it stands, TMDB basically prevents any TMDB user from adding any kind of special edition, director's cut, or 3D edition to their library.

Surely it's no harder than allowing people to list these special editions as separate movies or as part of the original movie's collection, and force them to upload a unique image for the poster?

Why is this not yet supported, almost two years after the original ticket?

There's actually a decent amount of work implement this properly, and a pre-requisite is to support multiple release dates per movie, per country.

It will get done one day, but there's many more things that are higher on the priority list (I've got probably at least the first 6 months of 2015 planned out).

Do you need any user input for this?

e.g. will a 3D version be a dedicated version - or just directors cut etc.

Please implement. I read a comment from 2012 saying this was likely to be done in 2013.

If it needs to be flat how about allowing multiple entries per movie and a link to "all other data points to xyz movie entry?"

Perhaps the complexity of this is the problem and any movies with the highest popularity (gross per country) should match first if there are exact duplicates found. Like does it have to be super complicated? Right now it's really a problem that other services can't find good matches when there are multiple cuts of a film. Would be fantastic to get this bumped up in priority.
